MIT: ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY
(Email Duane Perry)

In keeping with a long tradition in the electrical industry, the Electrical Technology program at West Kentucky Community & Technical College helps students develop skills to become broadly educated in this changing field.

Curriculum is designed to help students share the common learning experience, as well as, prepare them for a successful and productive life in their chosen field of study.

Graduates will be expected to apply sound standards of analysis and evaluation to reach logical decisions, thus helping them to understand the role and applications of technology and science in the changing world.

The Electrical Technology curriculum at West Kentucky Community & Technical College is based on the requirements of the electrical industry. Professionals in the electrical industry chair our advisory board who monitor the curriculum so it is kept current with technological advances.

Program offerings include competencies in the generation, transformation, and use of electricity. Troubleshooting and problem solving skills are developed in electrical motor controls, industrial electronics, fluid power, and programmable logic controllers, and process control.

The electrical industry has job opportunities in many areas.

These areas range from maintenance technician in a manufacturing plant (maintain and monitor electrical and electronic equipment for process control) to electrical construction. (The fabrication, installation and calibration of electrical equipment and components in commercials and industrial environments.)

Students are given the opportunity to enhance their learning experience in the construction field through apprenticeship training with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers International. The Brotherhood interviews applicants from the College quarterly for apprenticeship training.

Electrical Technology students experience their chosen field through co-op and internships with area chemical and power production facilities, electrical contractors and manufacturers.

Students are encouraged to join the College's student section of the International Society for Measurement and Control (ISA). This nonprofit organization offers students the opportunity to build on knowledge learned in the classroom and compete with other students nationally and internationally.
