Computer-Aided Drafting
and Design - Architectural
(Email:
Stephanie Milliken)
Architectural Drafting is the leading
indicator for the construction industry, just as the construction
industry is the leading economic indicator for the nation.
Drafting and design are a necessary and integral part of
all progress because without a plan, communication of the
designer's ideas to the production personnel would be nearly
impossible.
The
drafter is a trained technician who transforms ideas, rough
sketches, specifications, and instructions from engineers
and designers into precise and detailed working drawings
according to conventions as established by the industry.
These industry standard drawings are then used to manufacture
or construct the depicted product. The design drafter must
be a creative and organized thinker who interprets directions;
sketches and draws to scale; analyzes structural, electrical,
and mechanical components of buildings; prepares specifications;
estimates the cost of construction; and verifies survey
and layout work during the construction phase of building.
Architectural drafters draw floor plans, elevations, foundation
plans, plot plans, electrical and mechanical systems, pictorial
illustrations, and structural drawings. Structural systems
are studied for stress analysis using both mathematical
and graphical methods. Surveying instruments are used to
gather field data for transfer to survey drawings. Illustrations
and models are used for design presentations.
